Azeroth

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. The fictional planet on which the Warcraft video game series and its related stories are set
  2. A made-up world serving as the main setting of the Warcraft franchise of games, books and films
  3. The imaginary realm of Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft universe, home to humans, orcs and many other peoples

Etymology: Azeroth is not an old word at all. It is an invented proper noun, the name of the fictional world in Blizzard Entertainment's Warcraft series. Its history is that of a made-up name, not a borrowed or inherited one, so there is no earlier language to trace it through. The name belongs to the game world rather than to any real place, and it became widely known through the massively multiplayer game World of Warcraft, which is set there. Because it was coined for a fantasy setting, it has no dictionary sense beyond that fictional world.
