Put together, the word describes a shape that looks the same as it turns around a central line, such as a cylinder, a sphere, or a bottle viewed from the side. The "axi-" element is the one that does the work here. Mathematicians and engineers needed a compact way to say that a figure's symmetry depends only on its distance from one fixed line, and the combining form supplied exactly that sense of a central axis. The result is a word built almost entirely from older parts, put together for precision rather than inherited from ordinary speech.
