Etymology: The region takes its name from the Arverni, a Gaulish people who lived there before the Roman conquest. Julius Caesar wrote about them in his account of the Gallic War, and Vercingetorix, who led the great revolt against Rome, was an Arvernian. Their name passed into Latin as "Arvernia," which became the modern "Auvergne" in south-central France. Auvergnian is simply Auvergne with the suffix "-ian," which attaches to place names to mean "of or relating to" that place, or "a person from" it. As an adjective it describes things from the region, and as a noun it names its inhabitants. Speakers of the local Occitan dialect are usually called Auvergnat in French, a separate form that English writers rarely use.
