Etymology: The word is built entirely from Greek parts, but ancient Greeks never used it. "Auto-" comes from "autos" (self), "bio-" from "bios" (life), and "-graph" from "graphein" (to write). English speakers assembled these pieces to describe a self-written life story, which is why the word sounds scholarly even though no classical writer would have recognized it. The ending "-ist" usually marks someone who practices or specializes in something, as in "cellist" or "novelist." Attaching it to "autobiography" produces a deliberately professional-sounding label for a person who writes about their own life. In everyday use, "autobiographer" is the more common form. "Autobiographist" is rarer and is mostly found in dictionaries and in discussions of literary terminology.
