Etymology: Austenitic takes its name from austenite, the crystal structure of iron and carbon alloys that Sir William Chandler Roberts-Austen, an English metallurgist, helped make central to the study of steel. The metal was named in his honour, so the word is a tribute to a person rather than a description of a substance or process. The adjective is formed by adding the suffix "-ic", meaning "of or relating to", to austenite. In practice, it describes the face-centred cubic arrangement of atoms that gives certain stainless steels their non-magnetic character and their ductility, which is why the term is applied specifically to that family of steels.
