Etymology: Latin "aureolus" is a diminutive of "aureus," meaning golden, which comes from "aurum," gold. The diminutive softens the sense to something like "pleasantly golden," which suited a colour word better than a precious metal. The feminine form, "aureola," meant a golden crown in Latin. It passed into English as "aureole," the ring of light around the sun, moon, or a saint's head in painting. A halo, in other words, is a golden crown in disguise. The same root also gave painters "aureolin," a bright yellow pigment whose name points to its gold-like glow.
