Etymology: The most surprising thing about "aura" is how far its meaning has travelled from the air itself. In ancient Greek, "aúra" meant a breeze or soft wind, and the Latin "aura" kept that sense, referring to a breath of air or the air in general. English took the word directly from Latin as a learned borrowing, so it is a close relative of "air" and "east" through their shared ancestry, rather than a word that came through everyday speech. The modern sense of a distinctive atmosphere surrounding a person, place or thing grew from that image of a breeze that seems to emanate from something. The newest sense, a personal energy or vibe that people claim to give off, is much more recent: it arose in the early 2020s and was popularized on TikTok around May 2024, after slang sources began recording it.
