Etymology: "Attainers" is simply the plural of "attainer," a noun formed from the verb "attain" plus the agent suffix "-er," which marks a person or thing that performs the action. Something that attains is therefore one who reaches or gains a goal, and the plural names several such people at once. The verb "attain" is the older part of the story. It came into English from Old French "ataindre," which in turn descends from Latin "attingere," meaning "to touch upon" or "to reach to." The sense of physically touching or reaching gradually shifted toward arriving at an aim, a rank, or a state, which is why the modern noun now describes people who succeed in reaching their goals.
