Etymology: The English word "attack" came first, borrowed from French "attaquer," which itself traces back through Italian "attaccare," a verb meaning to fasten or join, the same root that gives us "attach." "Attacker" is simply "attack" with the agent suffix "-er," which English inherited through Middle English from Old French "-ier" and Latin "-arius," a suffix that marks a person who does or is connected with something. Built this way, the word names whoever performs the action, so an attacker is literally the one who attacks.
