Etymology: The surprising link here is with "tempt." Both come from the Latin "temptare," meaning "to test, try, or feel out," and "attemptare" was its intensified form, "to try at" or "to make trial of." The sense of enticing someone into wrongdoing grew later out of the older idea of testing a person's virtue, so a "tempter" was first simply one who put something to the test. This word is built from "attempt" with the agent suffix "-er," meaning one who performs the action. The form "atempter" is an older spelling, with a single "t," that reflects the Old French "atempter" from which English took "attempt." Its meaning is the plain one of the root: a person who makes an effort or tries something.
