Atacamites

Part of speech: noun

Definitions

  1. A rare crystalline mineral characterized by its copper content and typically found in arid regions; it serves as a secondary copper ore and can exhibit a greenish hue
  2. This mineral, often associated with oxidation processes, can form in supergene environments and is recognized for its potential use in mineralogical studies
  3. Atacamites are notable for their unique structural properties as a hydrated copper chloride mineral, commonly occurring alongside other copper-bearing minerals

Etymology: The plural "atacamites" simply names more than one specimen or sample of the mineral atacamite, so its history is that of the mineral's name. That name combines "Atacama", the desert region of northern Chile, with the suffix "-ite", which mineralogists use to name rocks, minerals and fossils. Atacamite was named for the place where it was found in quantity, the arid Atacama, one of the driest regions on Earth and a rich source of copper ore. The "-ite" ending follows a long habit in mineral naming, in which a mineral is labelled after a locality, a person or a notable property. Because the desert's copper deposits are famous, the name ties a green, chemically specific mineral to a landscape most English speakers will never visit.
