The first piece, "astrocyte," was formed from Greek "astron," meaning "star," and "kytos," meaning "hollow vessel" or "cell," describing the star-shaped branching of these cells under the microscope. Put together, the name is essentially a description: a growth made of star-shaped cells. Like many modern medical terms, it was assembled from classical Greek building blocks rather than handed down from ancient physicians, who had no knowledge of these cells at all. The word's meaning therefore stays literal, with no shift from an earlier sense.
