Etymology: "Astonisher" is a plain formation: the verb "astonish" with the agent suffix "-er" added, producing a noun for someone or something that astonishes. The suffix does the same job it does in "teacher" or "runner", turning an action into the person or thing performing it. The verb underneath has a more dramatic past. "Astonish" came into English from the earlier "astony" and ultimately from the Old French "estonner", meaning to stun or daze, which in turn traces back to Latin "extonare", "to thunder at". The original sense was closer to being struck senseless by a loud noise than to mild surprise, and that physical shock is still visible in the verb's force.
