Etymology: "Assures" is the third-person singular present form of "assure", so it is the verb in its "he, she or it" shape: someone assures you of something when they promise it firmly. The verb itself comes from Old French "asseurer", which later became modern French "assurer", and that in turn is built from Latin "ad-", meaning "to", plus "securus", meaning "secure" or "free from care." To assure someone, then, was originally to make them feel secure. That Latin root explains why the verb has a close cousin in English. "Assecure" is a doublet of "assure", meaning the two words descend from the same source but arrived by different routes, leaving English with two forms of one idea. The same root also gave Spanish "asegurar", which carries the sense of making something safe or certain, showing how the notion of security runs across these related languages.
