Etymology: The Latin verb "assistere" combined "ad-" (toward) with "sistere," a causative form of "stare," meaning "to stand." To assist was, quite literally, to take up a position beside someone. The present participle "assistens," meaning "standing beside," gave English the noun, so an assistant was originally one who stands alongside another. The same root appears in several common English words: "consist," "resist," "insist," and "persist" all descend from verbs built on "sistere." This term belongs to that family of standing-verbs, which carry senses of firmness and presence. The idea of someone who stays at your side runs through the whole group.
