Etymology: The word "assistant" comes from the Latin verb "assistere," built from "ad-" ("to" or "toward") and "sistere," a form of "stare," meaning "to stand." To assist someone was, literally, to stand beside them. Latin "assistere" passed into Middle French as "assister," and from there the agent form "assistant" entered Middle English as "assistent" before settling into its modern spelling. The verb "assist" and the noun "assistant" therefore share a physical image of standing alongside another person, a picture the English word has long since lost sight of. Helpers in the sense of a person who supports someone's work are, in etymological terms, simply people who stand next to you.
