Etymology: "Assented" is the past tense and past participle of "assent," so its story is really the story of the verb it comes from. That verb reached English from Old French "assentir," which in turn came from Latin "assentiri," built from "ad," meaning "to," and "sentire," meaning "to feel" or "to perceive." The original sense was therefore closer to feeling in agreement with someone than to signing on to a formal decision. The Latin root "sentire" also gave English "sense," "sentiment," and "consent," which share that core idea of perceiving or feeling something.
