Etymology: The name belongs to a legendary Greek musician, Arion of Methymna, whose story was told by ancient writers such as Herodotus: he was thrown overboard by sailors who wanted his money, but a dolphin carried him safely to shore on its back. In Greek he was "Arion" (Ἀρίων), and the Latin form "Arion" passed into the scientific world largely unchanged. The English word, however, is not really a mythological borrowing at all. It comes from the genus name Arion, which was given to a group of land snails, so the musician's name was reused as a label for a biological category. The term is therefore a Translingual scientific name that English took up directly, rather than a word that gradually drifted from myth into everyday speech.
