In Latin, "area" meant an open, level piece of ground, such as a threshing floor, a courtyard, or a vacant site, and it was the same word that gave Latin speakers a name for a bare patch of earth. Its ancestry reaches back to a Proto-Indo-European root meaning something like "dry" or "open," which is why the sense of a clear, flat space sits at its core. English took the word directly from Latin as a learned borrowing, so it arrived as a scholarly term rather than through everyday speech. The sense then widened from the physical ground itself to the extent of that ground, and eventually to any measured region of surface. That move from a concrete patch of earth to an abstract quantity is what lets the word now cover everything from a floor plan to a region of a city.
