Etymology: Apyrexia is built from two parts that each carry a long history of their own. The prefix "a-" is the Greek negating element, meaning "without" or "not," the same one found in words like "atypical" and "anaerobic." The second part, "pyrexia," is a medical term for fever, formed from the Greek "pyretos," meaning fever, which in turn comes from "pyr," fire. Fever, in other words, was named after fire, and apyrexia is literally a state of being without that burning. The word's real value lies in its specialised use. Physicians applied it to the interval between fever attacks, a stretch of calm in a disease that comes and goes, such as malaria or other intermittent fevers. For a clinician tracking a patient's course, the fever-free period was a meaningful event worth naming on its own, rather than a mere absence to be described in passing.
