Etymology: "Appears" is the third-person singular form of "appear", so the story belongs to the verb itself. The verb came into Middle English from Old French "aparoir", which in turn came from the Latin "appāreō", meaning "to appear". That Latin verb is built from "ad", meaning "to", and "pāreō", meaning "to come forth, to become visible". The sense of coming into view is therefore built into the word's construction from the start. The deeper roots of "pāreō" reach back to a Proto-Indo-European base meaning "watch, see", which also gave rise to the idea of protecting, since keeping watch is a way of guarding. The English word, however, keeps only the visual half of that pairing: something that comes forward into sight.
