- A botanical term describing a flowering species that typically attracts attention due to its colorful blossoms
Etymology: The Greek "ánthos" meant "flower," and "anthemon" grew from it as a word for a flower or a flower-like ornament. Its diminutive, "anthemion," became the name for a common decorative motif in Greek architecture, a stylised palmette or honeysuckle pattern carved along temples and vases. English borrowed "anthemion" for that architectural sense, and the plant-name use is the more recent and less common application. The word is easy to mistake for "anthem," but the two are unrelated. "Anthem" descends from "antiphon," a liturgical chant sung in alternating choirs, which reached Old English as "antefn" through Late Latin "antiphona." The resemblance is pure coincidence.
