Etymology: "Anteriormost" is a simple compound: "anterior," meaning "situated in front," plus the superlative suffix "-most," which marks the extreme end of a series, as in "foremost" or "innermost." Put together, the word picks out the very front of a line of things, the point furthest forward. The suffix does the same job in "uppermost" and "hindmost," where it attaches to an adjective of position to name its farthest extent. "Anterior" itself comes from Latin "anterior," the comparative of "ante," meaning "before" or "in front of." The Latin comparative gave English a word for things lying further forward than something else. English then added "-most" to that comparative-derived base, producing a double superlative sense: the most forward of all.
