Etymology: The English verb arrived by way of Old French "anoncier," which came from the Latin "annūntiāre," meaning "to report" or "to bring word." That Latin verb was built from "ad," "to," and "nūntiāre," from "nūntius," a messenger or bearer of news. So at its root, announcing is simply delivering a message to someone. The Latin word for that messenger survives in English as "nuncio," a papal ambassador, which shows how closely the two words are related. "Announce" and "annunciate" are doublets, two forms of the same Latin root that entered English by different routes, and the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary takes its name from the same verb.
