Etymology: The verb comes from Latin "annotare," built from the prefix "ad-" ("to" or "toward") and "notare," meaning "to mark" or "to note down." "Notare" itself came from "nota," a mark or sign. An annotation, then, is literally a mark added beside something, which is what a marginal comment does: it sits next to the text it explains. The same root turns up in words that seem unrelated. "Note" and "denote" share it, as does "notary," from Latin "notarius," a person who wrote in shorthand. Each keeps the core idea of setting down a visible mark.
