Etymology: In Greek, "angelos" meant simply "messenger," and the neuter "angelion" meant the message itself, a piece of news or a report. The Persian royal courier system, which Herodotus described with the Greek term "angareion," may be the distant source of the "angelos" group, though this connection is debated. The heavenly sense came later. Early Christian writers used "angelos" for the spirits who carry God's word to humans, so a word for a human runner came to describe a celestial one. The neuter "angelion" was rarely used in this sense, and the heavenly meaning belongs mainly to the masculine "angelos," which passed into English as "angel."
