Etymology: "Analysed" is the past tense and past participle of "analyse", the British spelling of "analyze". The verb it comes from traces back to ancient Greek "analuein", built from "ana-", meaning "up" or "back", and "luein", meaning "to loosen" or "to undo". The original sense was literal: to unloose or untie something, taking it apart piece by piece until its structure became clear. English borrowed the verb from Medieval Latin "analysis" and its related forms, which carried that same idea of breaking something down into its components. Over time the meaning moved from physical separation toward intellectual examination, so that to analyse a thing came to mean studying its parts in order to understand the whole.
