Etymology: Altruistically is a straightforward formation: the adjective "altruistic" with the adverb ending "-ally" tacked on, and it is the newer half of a story that begins with a French coinage. "Altruistic" is built from "altruism," which the French philosopher Auguste Comte introduced in the 1850s as "altruisme," a deliberate invention from the Latin "alter," meaning "other," to name the opposite of selfishness. English took the word in that form, and "altruistic" followed with the Latin-derived suffix "-istic." The adverb "altruistically" is simply the adjective plus the English "-ally" ending, the same pattern that turns "basic" into "basically." It describes an action done in a selfless way, for the benefit of others.
