Etymology: "Alow" is an old word meaning "below" or "down," built from the prefix "a-" (from Old English "on," meaning "on" or "in") and "low." It survived longest in nautical use, where the phrase "alow and aloft" meant below and above deck, and the spelling "alowe" appears in older texts as a variant. The "a-" prefix appears in many older English words, such as "afoot," "ashore," and "aside," where it similarly attaches a locative sense to a base word. "Alow" follows that pattern, so its meaning is transparent once the parts are separated. Its use has faded almost entirely outside sailing contexts.
