Etymology: "Alimenta" is the plural of Latin "alimentum," meaning "nourishment" or "food," and it comes from the verb "alere," "to nourish, rear, or sustain." The same root gave English "aliment," "alimentary," and "alimony," the last of which preserves the older sense of maintenance payments meant to sustain a former spouse. In Roman usage, "alimenta" referred especially to public grants for feeding and raising poor children, a program associated with the emperor Trajan and later emperors, who funded such support through endowments. The English word itself arrived as a borrowing from Latin, so its meaning stayed close to the Latin sense of supplying what sustains life. Since the form is a Latin plural, English speakers usually meet it in historical or legal contexts rather than everyday speech.
