Etymology: Algology is one of those words that can be pulled apart cleanly: "alga," the Latin word for seaweed or pond scum, joined to the Greek-derived suffix "-logy," meaning the study of something. The result is simply the scientific study of algae, the broad group of mostly aquatic organisms ranging from microscopic plankton to giant kelp. The suffix itself comes through Latin "-logia" from Greek "-logia," which grew out of "lógos," a word meaning speech, reason, or account, and which is the source of countless English words ending in "-logy." The Latin base "alga" is the older piece of the puzzle. It was used for seaweeds and other plants growing in water, and it passed into English as a scientific term used for these organisms.
