  3. Having to do with the properties of sound and the act of hearing ; referring to an instrument whose volume comes purely from its own body rather than electronics

Etymology: The Greek root "akouein" means "to hear," and the adjective "akoustikos" meant "of hearing" or "relating to the ear." The Greeks also used "akoustēs" for a listener, so the core idea is simply the act of perceiving sound. English took the adjective from Greek through learned Latin and French channels, and the spelling with a "k" is the Greek form. English settled on "c" for the usual spelling, so "akoustik" today reads as a deliberate or stylized variant rather than standard usage. The root also gave English "acoustics," the study of sound.
