Etymology: The plural "airmen" is simply the plural of "airman," and the word is a plain compound: "air" joined to "man." The first element comes from Old French "air," which passed into Middle English as "aire" and was borrowed from Latin "āēr," itself from Ancient Greek "āḗr," the word for the lower atmosphere, the mist-filled air close to the earth as opposed to the upper aether. The second element is the Old English "mann," the ordinary word for a human being, which also gave the Middle English suffix "-man" that English later used freely to form nouns for a person doing a particular job. Put together, "airman" originally named a person connected with the air in a general sense, and only later narrowed to refer specifically to someone who flies. Its meaning has therefore moved from the open sky itself to the human being who moves through it.
