Etymology: "Air freshener" is a plain compound: "air" plus "freshener," an agent noun meaning "something that freshens." "Freshener" is built from "fresh," the verb-making suffix "-en," and the agent suffix "-er," so the name literally describes a thing that makes the air fresh. The older sense of "fresh" is more surprising. In Old English, "fersc" described water that was not salty, a meaning that survives in "fresh water." The sense of clean, cool, or untainted came later, so the root idea is contrast with an unwanted quality. The product's name therefore states its job directly: it changes the air so that it no longer carries unwanted smells.
