Etymology: The Airedale terrier takes its name from Airedale, the valley of the River Aire in West Yorkshire, England, where the breed was developed in the second half of the nineteenth century. "Airedales" is simply the plural of "airedale", so it refers to more than one of these dogs. The river's name is older still, and the valley's name combines it with the Old English "dæl", meaning valley, a common element in northern English place names.
