Etymology: "Aircrewman" is a plain compound: "aircrew" joined to "-man," a suffix that has been used in English since Old English, when "mann" meant a human being of either sex. Over the centuries "-man" was attached to many job titles, so that a person's occupation could be named by the work they did, such as "seaman" or "craftsman." "Aircrew" is itself a compound of "air" and "crew," the group of people who operate an aircraft. Combining it with "-man" produces a word for a single member of that group, one who carries out the operational and safety duties on board. Because the suffix is ordinary and productive, the word needs little explanation beyond its two parts.
