Etymology: Ailuromancy is a compound built from two Greek elements. The first, "ailouros", means "cat" (the Greek word is often said to have been used for the cat itself, though the term is commonly glossed as "cat" in dictionaries), and the second, "-manteia", is the Greek suffix for divination, the practice of foretelling or uncovering hidden knowledge. Combined, they describe prophecy read from the behaviour of cats. The suffix "-mancy" is the more familiar half. It appears in many older words for divination, such as "necromancy" (divination through the dead) and "geomancy" (divination through earth or patterns of dots), so ailuromancy follows a long-established pattern of naming a kind of fortune-telling by the thing consulted. The formation is a modern coinage built from classical parts, not a term that ancient Greeks themselves used for cat-based prophecy.
