The fungus itself takes its name from the Latin "aspergillum," an implement for sprinkling holy water, because its spore-bearing structures resemble that tool. The word is therefore a deliberate blend rather than an inherited or borrowed term. Its meaning is fixed by its parts: a toxin traced back to that particular mould. Because the compound is so transparent, it reads at once as a chemical class name, which is exactly what researchers needed when they began grouping these related compounds together.
