The pairing is a plain technical compound, and the plural describes more than one such sector or branch of the field. The compound captures a conceptual merger. Aeronautics, the engineering of flight within the atmosphere, and astronautics, the engineering of travel beyond it, were once largely separate disciplines. Joining them under one term reflects how the two fields came to share materials, design methods and workforces, so that a single industry now spans both air and space.
