Etymology: "Aerobots" is the plural of "aerobot," a compound built from "aero-," the combining form drawn from Greek "aēr" meaning "air," and "-bot," a clipped form of "robot." The pieces are straightforward: the first half places the machine in the air, and the second names it as an automated device. The "-bot" ending is the more telling part. "Robot" came into English from Czech "robota," meaning forced labour, and the clipped "-bot" became a productive element for machines that act on their own, as in "chatbot" or "softbot." Attaching it to "aero-" yields a term for a flying machine that does its work without a pilot aboard.
