Etymology: "Aerobot" is a plain technical compound, built from "aero-", the combining form from Greek "aēr" meaning "air", and "-bot", a clipped form of "robot". The sense is clear from its parts: a robot that operates in the air rather than on the ground or in space. The first element carries most of the history. "Aero-" has been attached to words for flying and aircraft since the early twentieth century, when aviation itself was new, and it is still productive in forms like "aerospace" and "aerodynamics". The second element, "-bot", came from "robot", a word the Czech writer Karel Čapek popularised in his 1920 play "R.U.R." before it was adopted in English. Compounds ending in "-bot" became common once machines that could act with some autonomy became a subject of practical engineering. Taken together, the word joins a Greek air-element to a twentieth-century shortening of a Czech coinage, which explains why it sounds both scientific and science-fictional at once.
