Etymology: "Aequilibrium" is a Latin compound: "aequus" meaning "equal" or "level", combined with "libra", "balance" or "scales". The English word "equilibrium" comes straight from this Latin form, and the Latin "aequilibrium" was itself a classical term meaning equal balance, used in both literal and figurative senses. The original picture is physical: two pans of a balance held level, weights matched on each side. Over time the sense moved from the literal scales to any state where opposing forces cancel out, so that a body at rest under equal pushes from all directions, or a economy whose supply and demand settle, is described this way.
