Etymology: Aechmea is a genus name, and English took it directly from the Latin-form scientific name that botanists gave the plant. The name comes from the Greek "aichmē", meaning "spear" or "point", a reference to the sharp, pointed shape of the flower bracts and leaf tips that characterise the genus. Most species are epiphytes that perch on tree branches in Central and South American rainforests, collecting water in their rosettes of stiff leaves. Because the name is a technical coinage from the classical root, it belongs to the scientific vocabulary of plant classification rather than everyday speech. Its use in English is therefore confined to botanical and horticultural contexts, where it names the whole genus and, by extension, individual plants of that group.
