Adverbialising
Part of speech: verb
Definitions
- Converting a word or phrase into an adverb, or using it in the function of an adverb within a sentence
- Making a term take on the grammatical role of an adverb by modifying a verb, adjective, or other adverb
- Changing the part of speech of a word so that it qualifies how an action, quality, or event is carried out
Etymology: "Adverbialising" is the present participle and gerund of "adverbialise", so it is simply the form of that verb used for the ongoing action of turning something into an adverb or giving it adverbial function. The verb itself is built from "adverbial", which in turn comes from "adverb", a word borrowed through Latin from the Latin "adverbium", meaning a word added to a verb. The "-ise" ending is the common English verb-forming suffix, and the "-ing" ending marks the ongoing or noun-like use of the verb.
