The singular entered English by borrowing from Middle French "adoration," which itself came from Latin "adōrātiō," meaning worship or adoration. That Latin noun was built from "adōrō," a verb whose parts were "ad," meaning "to" or "towards," and "ōrō," meaning "beg" or "pray." Put together, the root image is of approaching someone to plead, a physical gesture of supplication before it became the more elevated idea of devotion.
