Definitions

- A small penguin species inhabiting the southern polar regions, distinguished by a white eye ring and its breeding behavior on ice and rocky shores
Etymology: The Adélie penguin takes its name from a woman, not a place. In 1840, the French explorer Jules Dumont d'Urville sailed south to the Antarctic and named a stretch of coastline "Terre Adélie" after his wife, Adèle Pépin. The penguins he found along that coast came to bear the same name, and the spelling was altered in English to "Adelie." The adjective-like pattern here is simple: the word is a proper name turned into a common noun, the way "Dumont" might have been. Dumont d'Urville had married Adèle Pépin, the daughter of a Parisian watchmaker, and he dedicated the land to her, a gesture that gave the bird its name almost by accident of geography.
