Etymology: Activism is a plain formation: the adjective "active" with the suffix "-ism," which in English forms nouns naming a doctrine, practice, or movement. The plural "activisms" simply names several distinct campaigns or movements at once, so a reader meeting it is seeing one word stretched to cover many causes. The adjective "active" has a longer ancestry. It descends from Latin "āctīvus," meaning "doing, practical, effective," formed from "agere," "to drive, do, act." That Latin word reached English through Old French "actif" and appeared in Middle English as "actyf," which gives the modern sense of doing something rather than merely existing.
