Etymology: "Actioner" is a plain English formation: "action" with the agent suffix "-er" attached. The suffix itself has a longer road into English. It came from Latin "-ārius", which passed through Old French "-ier" and reached Middle English as "-er". Its ancestor in Old English was a separate suffix, "-ere", so English already had its own agent endings before French ones arrived. The base word "action" was borrowed into Middle English from Old French "aucion", which descends from Latin "āctiō", a noun built on the verb "agere", meaning "to drive or do". Because "action" already meant "doing" or "the thing done", adding "-er" creates a word for whoever or whatever carries that doing out. The result is a deliberately general label: it can name a person, a company, or a mechanism, which is why the dictionary definition stretches across all three.
