Abnormous
Part of speech: adjective
Definitions

- Unusually huge in size or extent, beyond what would normally be expected
- Describing something enormous and out of proportion with ordinary measure or form
Etymology: Abnormous sounds like a cousin of "abnormal," but it has a history of its own: it grows from the same Latin root, "norma," meaning a carpenter's square or rule, which gave English the word "norm." The Latin "abnormis" combined "ab-" (away from) with "norma," so the core sense was literally "away from the rule" or "out of line with the square." The English adjective is built from that Latin base plus the familiar suffix "-ous," which turns a noun into an adjective meaning "full of" or "having the quality of." Abnormous therefore means something that has strayed far beyond the usual measure, and it tends to be used with the sense of a size or degree so great that it seems unnatural or monstrous.
